Immunotherapy for Environmental and Venom Allergies
About Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy (desensitisation) is a long‑term treatment that builds tolerance to specific allergens through graded exposure. It is an effective and well‑established treatment for environmental allergies such as house dust mite and grass pollen, helping reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma.
Treatment Options
Immunotherapy can be delivered in two ways:
Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (SCIT): a fine injection administered into the upper arm at regular intervals, typically once every 4 weeks in the maintenance phase.
Sublingual Therapy (SLIT): daily sprays, drops, or dissolvable tablets placed under the tongue
Treatment typically continues for 3–5 years to achieve long‑lasting symptom improvement.
In addition to treating aeroallergens, immunotherapy is also available for certain venoms (honeybee or wasp) in patients with a history of anaphylaxis or severe systemic reactions to insect stings. This treatment is delivered via subcutaneous injections and requires long‑term therapy to reduce the risk of repeated severe reactions in the future.
