About Biologics

Biologics are modern, targeted medications made from large, complex molecules designed to act on specific proteins, cells, or pathways within the immune system. They are used to treat a range of health conditions where precise immune modulation is needed.

In allergy and atopic disease, two injectable biologic therapies- both monoclonal antibodies- are currently available in Australia for patients who meet strict eligibility criteria. These treatments may be considered for individuals with severe eczema (atopic dermaittis), persistent hives (chronic spontaneous urtiaria), or asthma when standard therapies have not provided sufficient disease control.

Dupilumab (Dupixent)

Dupilumab is a monoclonal antibody that blocks signalling of two key inflammatory proteins—IL‑4 and IL‑13—which play a major role in conditions such as eczema and asthma. By targeting this pathway, Dupilumab helps reduce inflammation and improve symptom control.

Dr Willcocks may recommend Dupilumab for selected patients based on their clinical history, investigation results, and response to standard therapies.

In Australia, PBS eligibility is currently limited to:

• Severe uncontrolled allergic asthma (patients aged 6 years and older)

• Severe atopic dermatitis- eczema (patients aged 12 years and older)

Omalizumab (Xolair)

Omalizumab is a monoclonal antibody that binds to IgE, the antibody responsible for triggering allergic pathways that lead to hives (urticaria), swelling (angioedema), allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, and some forms of asthma. By blocking IgE, Omalizumab helps reduce the frequency and severity of allergic symptoms.

Dr Willcocks may offer this treatment to suitable patients after assessing their medical history, test results, and response to first‑line therapies.

In Australia, PBS eligibility currently includes:

• Severe allergic asthma (patients aged 6 years and older)

• Severe chronic spontaneous urticaria- CSU (patients aged 12 years and older)

Omalizumab is also FDA-approved in the United States for certain patients with severe food allergies, but it has not received TGA approval for this indication in Australia (i.e. only available via private prescription).
