About immune disorders

The immune system is responsible for protecting the body from infections and keeping us healthy. Sometimes, however, it doesn’t function as expected. Immune‑related conditions can include:

  • Immune deficiencies – when part of the immune system is functioning poorly or absent. This may be primary (also known as Inborn Errors of Immunity or IEIs- related to changes or variants in a person’s genes) or secondary to other illnesses, medications, or treatments.

  • Autoimmune disorders – when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissue(s)

  • Autoinflammatory disorders – when the immune system becomes inappropriately overactive without a clear trigger

These conditions are rare. They can cause a wide range of symptoms, many of which are non-specific; such as:

  • Poor growth

  • Recurrent or unexplained fevers

  • Frequent, severe, persistent, or unusual infections

Dr Sophie Willcocks is experienced in assessing concerns related to the immune system. She provides a thorough evaluation that includes a detailed history, physical examination, and—when needed—blood tests, medical imaging, and/or referral to other relevant specialists.

How Are Immune Disorders Treated?

If an immune disorder is diagnosed or suspected, Dr Willcocks will discuss individualised treatment options and outline any recommended monitoring or follow‑up plans. The goal is to ensure each child receives the right care, support, and long‑term management based on their specific needs.
