Allergic rhinitis, often called hay fever, happens when the immune system overreacts to airborne allergens such as dust mites, grass pollens, pet dander, mould, trees, weeds, or cockroaches. It is very common in Australia, affecting about one in four people.

Children and adolescents may experience symptoms that are seasonal or year‑round (perennial), including:

  • Itchy or runny nose

  • Nasal congestion

  • Sneezing

  • Mouth breathing or snoring

  • Throat clearing or cough related to post-nasal drip

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Dark circles under the eyes

Allergic conjunctivitis can occur on its own or alongside hay fever. It causes:

  • Red, watery eyes

  • Itchy eyes

  • Swelling around the eyes

The impact of these conditions is often under-estimated. Research shows they can significantly affect an individual’s sleep, school performance, concentration, and overall mental health and wellbeing. Allergic rhinitis can also contribute to asthma exacerbations and vice-versa.

How We Diagnose and Treat Allergic Rhinitis & Conjunctivitis

Dr Willcocks provides a thorough assessment, including all relevant testing, to identify each patient’s specific triggers.

She will then generate a treatment plan, which may include:

  • Practical advice on reducing allergen exposure

  • Recommendations on symptom control measures, such as oral or topical antihistamines and saline rinses

  • Prescription of intranasal corticosteroid or intranasal corticosteroid/antihistamine combination sprays for disease control

For children with moderate-to-severe persistent symptoms, Dr Willcocks may recommend sublingual or subcutaneous immunotherapy (also known as desensitisation). This long‑term treatment helps retrain the immune system to reduce allergy symptoms over time. See more information on immunotherapy under the Services tab.
